MANILA – San Miguel Beermen head coach Leo Austria did not hide his disappointment over his squad’s poor performance in their last few matches in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup.

Austria said his team might have become too complacent and relied too much on their import Dezmine Wells, as evident in their struggles in their last five games in the season-ending conference.

The Beermen settled for a come-from-behind wins against NLEX Road Warriors and Columbian Dyip and were drubbed by Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, NorthPort Batang Pier and Meralco Bolts.

“We’re so complacent because of our good start (4-1 in the conference coming off the Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup conquests) and they thought it’s easy to win,” Austria said.

He added: “We have to continue competing. In our last games, we were just playing, we were not competing. I told them we should start, we have to act together especially in practice.”

Austria said the 10-day break between their Bolts’ game on Sunday and their next match against Blackwater Elite was an opportunity to reflect on things and make course-correction.

“There’s a lot of people expecting a lot more from us and that’s not our game. We should get back to the way we played in the playoffs, and the way we play right now is not like we’re looking for another championship,” he said./PN
