MANILA – San Miguel Beermen bolstered its 2022 PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals hopes with a 119-99 domination of TNT Tropang Giga over the weekend at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Reinforcement Devon Scott tallied double-double 28 points and 14 rebounds, while Jaymar Perez added 17 points as the Beermen recorded its third consecutive victory for a 6-5 win-loss slate.
Vic Manuel, Simon Enciso and Ilonggo Jericho Cruz contributed 16, 15 and 11 markers, respectively, while June Mar Fajardo and Marcio Lassiter had 12 markers apiece for the Beermen.
The Beermen waxed hot early behind Scott and Perez as they cruised to a 28-15 advantage before pulling away late in the second when they closed the quarter on a 16-5 run for a 64-40 halftime lead.
San Miguel Beer continued to dominate in the second half as the lead reached as high as 28 points to renew their mastery of TNT in the first meeting between the two teams since their epic 2022 PBA Philippine Cup finale.
“Our defense really picked up. Our mentality right now is turning defense into offense. I think we did a great job defending the plays of Talk ‘N Text,” said Beermen assistant coach Jorge Gallent.
Roger Pogoy top-scored with 23 points, reinforcement Matt Mobley and Kelly Williams had 18 points each, while Frederick Tungcab and Negrense Raul Soyud had 13 and 11 points, respectively, as the Tropang Giga dropped to 4-8.
The Tropang Giga was eliminated from playoff contention for the first time under head coach Chot Reyes and since the 2018 Governors’ Cup when the team was handled by Bong Ravena and active consultant Mark Dickel.
Meanwhile, Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters pounced on a Lester Prosper-less Terrafirma Dyip for a 135-84 domination. The Fuel Masters improved to 6-6, while Dyip dropped to 1-11.
Ryan Roose Garcia tallied 20 points to lead the Fuel Masters, Encho Serrano and Kaleb Wesson had 17 each, while Jason Perkins, RJ Jazul, Kurt Lojera and Sean Manganti had 16, 14, 11 and 10, respectively.
