MANILA – San Miguel Beermen showed its steadiness in the endgame. It held off Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 104-100, in the 2021-2022 PBA Governors’ Cup last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
After seeing its double-digit edge trimmed to 96-94 by a furious fourth quarter run by the Painters, the Beermen got timely shots from Vic Manuel, Terrence Romeo and Shabazz Muhammad for a 102-98 score.
Rain or Shine made its last push at 100-102 on two free throws by Jayvee Mocon with 12 seconds left. Two freebies by Muhammad, however, wrapped up the win for San Miguel Beer.
Muhammad finished the match with 33 points, 21 rebounds and six assists, while Manuel chipped in 18 markers. With its win, San Miguel Beer moved up to 6-4 win-loss slate.
Romeo drained four triples as he finished with 17 markers. June Mar Fajardo and Jaymar Perez ended up with 14 and 11 markers, respectively.
Henry Walker tallied 23 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Beau Belga and Jewel Ponferrada added 19 and 17 points, as the Painters slumped to 3-7 slate.
In the first game, Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters wasted a double-digit edge before pulling off a 104-99 triumph over Alaska Aces to move up to 5-5 win-loss slate.
After seeing its 14-point lead turned to a 93-92 deficit, the Fuel Masters leaned on a triple and an inside conversion by Jason Perkins to take a 99-94 advantage.
The Aces threatened to within a basket twice with last at 99-101 on an inside shot by Yousef Taha bug a three-point play by Fuel Masters import Du’Vaughn Maxwell sealed the win for them.
Matthew Wright fell short of a triple-double with 26 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds, Perkins added 22 markers, while Maxwell and RJ Jazul had 21 markers each for Phoenix.
