SAN JOSE, Antique – The municipality of San Remigio, Antique is temporarily closing down tourism sites. Two new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were confirmed.

Mayor Margarito Mission Jr. issued Executive Order 155 on Dec. 21 temporarily banning local tourists and suspending tourism-related activities in Barangay Aningalan and the neighboring villages of Tubudan and La Union.

Barangay Aningalan, the town’s premier tourism destination, is dubbed the “summer capital” of Antique due to its cool climate.

It is also known for its Igbaclag Cave, zip line and strawberry farms.

Tubudan and La Union villages, on the other hand, have beautiful upland sceneries and are known for their high-value crops such as broccoli and cabbage.

“Let us sacrifice our tourism industry for the good of the general public,” Mission said.

He appealed for cooperation from resort owners and operators in Barangay Aningalan and the two other villages.

Likewise, Mission reminded operators and drivers of public utility vehicles (PUVs) to strictly enforce physical distancing on passengers.

“Mandatory wearing of facemasks of all individuals who transact business with the local government unit or in any other public places…is strictly required,” Mission stated in Executive Order 155.

The Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) confirmed the new COVID-19 cases in San Remigio on Dec. 18 and 19.

Mission said contact tracing by the IPHO and local health workers was ongoing in barangays Aningalan, Tubudan and La Union. (PNA/PN)
