San Sebastian escapes Letran in NCAA basketball

MANILA – Ken Villapando scored on a game-winning layup and the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags pulled off a 102-101 escape over Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights in NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball at the San Juan Arena.

Trailing 100-101, the Knights failed to extend the advantage, which the Golden Stags took advantage on a Villapando fast break layup from a pass by Allyn Bulanadi to take a 102-101 edge with 18 seconds left on Tuesday.


The Knights still had a chance to win it but Fran Yu and Edson Batiller misfired three-point attempts.

RK Ilagan top-scored with 22 points and seven assists, while Bulanadi and Alvin Capobres chipped in 21 and 19 markers.

The Golden Stags improved to 3-3 win-loss record.


“Mas gutom ‘yung mga batang manalo eh,” said Golden Stags assistant coach Melo Banua, who called the shots in lieu of mentor Egay Macaraya who is serving a one-game suspension.


Aside from missing their head coach, the Golden Stags also played decimated in the overtime as six players fouled out led by Ilagan, Arjan Dela Cruz, JM Calma, Alex Desoyo, Anmar Cosari, and Gelo Loristo.


For the Knights, Larry Muyang tallied 32 points on 10-of-12 shooting to go along with 18 rebounds and two blocks. Balanza added 21 points. The Knights dropped to 5-3 win-loss card./PN
