UNIVERSITY of San Agustin escaped with a 51-50 win over Ateneo de Iloilo in elementary boys basketball of the Iloilo Schools Sports Association Meet at the Ledesco Gym of Hua Siong College of Iloilo.
San Agustin clinched the victory on a go-ahead conversion by Chad Ernest Cartel with eight seconds left in the Sunday game. Ateneo had a chance to win it but Jurrien Iñigo Tenorio misfired in his 3-point attempt.
Cartel finished the match with 21 points while Godfrey Vince Iron added 14 markers for San Agustin (4-0). Tenorio led Ateneo (3-2) – the defending champions – with 18 points.
Meanwhile Hua Siong Red Phoenix made a quick work of PAREF-Westbridge 128-21. Jake Andrei Guarra scored 22 points for the Red Phoenix while Emmel Ghercam Bardenas added 18.
St. Joseph School, on the other hand, cruised to an easy 52-23 victory over Santa Isabel College of Iloilo. Jeal Nabo and Samuel Madison Jr. combined for 26 points for St. Joseph.
Elementary boys basketball action continues Tuesday at the Western Institute of Technology gym starting 1 p.m. with the Red Phoenix facing San Agustin; Santa Clarita Primes battling Westbridge; and Ateneo taking on St. Joseph./PN
