ILOILO – The municipality of Santa Barbara marked yesterday the 122nd anniversary of the first raising of the Philippine flag outside Luzon, known as the “Cry of Santa Barbara.”

Due to the coronavirus disease pandemic, the local government unit (LGU) conducted muted flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies at the monument of Ilonggo hero Genera Martin Delgado at the public plaza.

During the event, the LGU honored punong barangays of the town’s 60 villages, 11 offices and organizations serving at the frontlines in the fight against coronavirus disease 2019.

Sangguniang Bayan member Dennis Octaviano compared the awardees to past heroes who raised the Philippine flag at the plaza on Nov. 17, 1898 marking the start of the struggle against the Spanish colonizers.
