CAPIZ – Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio had some words of encouragement for the people and local leaders of Capiz during the province’s Capiztahan highlight on April 15.

Duterte-Carpio was in Capiz as one of the guests of honor during the Capiztahan’s Maragtas sang Capisnon Cultural Show. It was her first time joining the festival.

In her speech, the Vice President said Capiz holds so much promise.

“As the seafood capital [of the Philippines], you consistently attract social media, food enthusiasts, and all kinds of tourists,” said Duterte-Carpio.

She encouraged local leaders to strengthen mechanisms that bolster tourism and build up the capacities of sectors important to economic growth.

Duterte-Carpio noted that the province, however, is vulnerable to disasters.

“Let us take this opportunity to prepare, educate and train our community on DRRM (disaster risk reduction and management) focusing on mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery,” the vice president said.

She also enjoined barangays to establish DRRM action plans.

For the province’s peace and order, Duterte-Carpio called on everyone to do their share in preserving communities, people’s safety and the freedom to maximize their potential.

“Peace and order are core building blocks of economic and environmental sustainability. Our economic freedom is predicated upon the safety of our people and the security that the province has from environmental and social adversity,” she stressed.

The Vice President further encouraged the local government to put a premium on education.

“Ilayo po natin ang ating mga anak sa kapahamahakan… Ilayo po naton sila sa insurhensya, terorismo, illegal na droga at kriminalidad. Ang susi po ng tuloy-tuloy na kaunlaran ng ating bayan ay edukasyon,” said Duterte-Carprio./PN
