LEADING by a full point after Round 6, GM Ivan Saric apparently thought he could draw his last three remaining games to sure victory. Unfortunately for him, Saric instead ran the proverbial gauntlet in the last three rounds and even lost to lead in Round 8 before finally winning by hard labor his last round game and luckily captured the 11th Mediterranean Men’s Chess Championship on better tiebreaks against IM Nderim Saraci of Kosovo.
The nine-round, 128-player Swiss event ended over the weekend in Petrovac, Montenegro.
Saric and Saraci wound up with identical 7½ points, but a better quotient gave the Croatian GM the title. Turkish GM Vahap Sanal, who was leading the event at the start of the final round, fought a protracted but losing final round battle with Saraci that lasted all of 123 moves of a London System. Reviewing the score of the game, it would appear Sanal missed a mate-in-one on move 54 and strangely shunned numerous invitations to draw by repetition – desperately striving to win. The loss sent Sanal to a three-way tie for third to fifth places with GM Robert Zelcic and IM Leon Livaic with seven points apiece. Meanwhile, GM Zdenko Kozul, IMs Luka Draskovic, Stavroula Tsolakidou, and Milos Stankovic, and GM Aleksandar Kovacevic round up the top ten in the standings by sharing sixth to tenth slots with 6½ markers apiece.
