BACOLOD City – Councilors urged the City Engineer’s Office to improve the drainage system at the Chinatown Center as soon as possible.
Chinatown Center, also known as Capitol Shopping Center, was declared a “potential growth center” under City Ordinance No. 576 series of 2011.
It is also the site of the annual Bacolaodiat Festival, the local Chinese New Year celebration every February.
“Our city’s Chinatown Center, especially along Narra and Tindalo avenues, suffers flooding during the rainy season due to defective or insufficient drainage system,” stated a Sangguniang Panlungsod resolution authored by Sonya Verdeflor.
“Stagnant water with very foul odor at the sidewalks and gutters [cause] inconvenience to various establishments and their clientele,” the resolution stated.
Since typhoons and/or heavy rains are frequent during November, “there is an urgent need for the city to address this perennial problem,” it added.
Earlier Rep. Greg Gasataya said drainage systems in this city may soon be replaced.
The Department of Public Works and Highways central office is coming up with a “comprehensive master plan” for drainage systems that is hoped to solve the perennial flooding here./PN
