MANILA – A bill seeking to improve police efficiency in the country has been filed in the Senate.
Senate Bill No. (SBN) 1285, or the PNP Internal Affairs Service Modernization Act, aims to strengthen the Internal Affairs Service (IAS) of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The measure was endorsed by the IAS in the wake of the recent killings of drug suspects and other criminals during police operations.
“It is of utmost importance to ensure that all members of the PNP clamp down on crime and corruption while fully abiding by the law and respecting basic human rights,” said Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, author.
SBN 1285 expands the motu propio investigation powers of the IAS to cover all acts and omissions by PNP officers that might discredit or hinder them from rendering their services effectively.
The bill also urges the PNP unit to improve functions such as character-building and carrying out inspections, audits, intelligence operations, and rehabilitation.
“Good governance must start from the law enforcers themselves and we must create all the necessary measures to help our police force succeed,” Aquino said./PN
