MANILA – Senators unanimously passed a bill allowing users to retain their cellphone numbers even if they change network providers.
Senate Bill No. 1636, or the “Lifetime Cellphone Number Act,” got 20 affirmative votes.
“The bill would give consumers the freedom to choose the provider that would give the best value for their money without having to lose or change their mobile numbers,” said Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, chairman of the Committee on Economic Affairs.
A P1-million fine will be slapped on telecommunication companies that would delay, withhold, refuse, or not deliver the benefits of mobile number portability to a subscriber within “24 hours from the time such subscriber completed [their] porting application,” the bill stated.
Erring companies may also face a total revocation of their operating franchises, the bill added./PN
