THE Senate committees in environment and natural resources and tourism expressed support for the imposition of a six-month moratorium on the construction of new buildings in Boracay Island.
“Okay lang ‘yung six months…It’s not stopping the business. It’s just stopping the additional businesses kasi marami na nagtatayo ng hotel [at] condo. Siguro padahandahanin muna,” said environment committee head Sen. Cynthia Villar.
Sen. Nancy Binay, chairwoman of tourism committee, echoed Villar’s sentiment, saying the world-class tourism destination needs a breathing space.
“I fully [support the six-month moratorium] and kung kailangan ng mas mahaba pang panahon para maghilom ang Boracay, ‘e susuportahan natin,” Binay said.
Binay told Panay News, “Ineexpect namin on Friday na makikita namin ang tunay na kalagayan ng Boracay. So sana sa pag-iikot namin makikita namin kung anu-ano ang mga kailangan at dapat gawin para masalba ang Boracay.”
The Department of Tourism had stopped the accreditation of establishments in Boracay while the island is under rehabilitation.
Villar said the March 2 Senate hearing on Boracay seeks to identify which “model” to use to keep the island from further degradation.
“Kasi may mga kinds of legislation that [have] been passed in the past, like the one passed for Batangas – ‘yung Batangas Tourism Authority something like that. Then may sinasuggest sila na heritage. Maraming models that we have to look at with regard to the management of Boracay. Titignan namin kung ano mas bagay sa Boracay,” Villar stressed.
But Villar said she is not in favor of shutting down the island, which President Rodrigo Duterte called a “cesspool” on Feb. 9.
“Hindi naman pwede ‘yun. Kasi mag mga nagcomply naman. May mga complaiant ‘e. Merong hindi complaiant. Hindi naman natin pwedeng parusahan ‘yung mga complaiant,” she said./PN
