MANILA – A resolution that aims to investigate the current state of the country’s transport infrastructure has been filed in the Senate.
Sen. Sonny Angara said the probe should determine whether transport policies promote the general welfare or not.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board ordered ride-sharing companies Grab and Uber to deactivate at least 50,000 of their so-called colorum drivers.
Many Filipinos were dismayed by the move to deactivate unaccredited ride-sharing drivers, saying Grab and Uber offered better service, safety, convenience, and courtesy than other transportation services like taxis.
“Law and rules must adjust and be interpreted to favor new technologies which make people’s lives more convenient,” said Angara, who led last year’s probe on the alleged overcharging by airport taxis.
The result of his Senate inquiry allowed Grab and Uber cars to enter the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to drop off and pick up passengers.
Meanwhile, Angara called on the government to ensure that social protection for affected drivers are in place prior to the implementation of the public utility vehicles modernization program.
The senator also sought solution to congested Metro Rail Transit stations and series of train glitches./PN
