MANILA – Senators Franklin Drilon and Aquilino Pimentel III have called for the modernization of immigration services in the country.
Drilon filed Senate Resolution No. 256 seeking for the possible reorganization of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) “to restore public confidence in our immigration controls.”
Necessary reforms would ensure that the immigration agency is resistant to corruption, the Ilonggo senator said.
He suggested that a stronger standards for selection of officers be implemented.
Also, the BI should carry out a “more stringent” system in disciplining their employees.
“There is a pressing need to confront and address the systemic and institutional weaknesses that make the BI susceptible to corruption,” he pointed out.
For his part, Pimentel said the agency has “desperate need” for modernization.
The BI has recently been in the spotlight due to the extortion charges against two BI deputy commissioners.
“There is no better time for a revamp than now,” the Senate president said.
He stressed that corruption in the bureau will continue to flourish unless old regulations and conditions that allowed illegal activities to develop and fester are completely terminated.
Pimentel was also instrumental in the passage of National Bureau of Investigation Modernization Law, or Republic Act 10867./PN
