ILOILO City – A 67-year-old woman complained to the Molo police that she was not given a discount in a restaurant.
Ma. Elena Malaga of Rizal Street, Mabriz, Maasin, Iloilo said it was only when she complained over her bill that the restaurant cashier honored the 20-percent discount mandated by law.
But she was still charged with the value-added tax (VAT), Malaga said.
The restaurant was located in Molo plaza.
Republic Act 9994 (Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010) defines a senior citizen or elderly as someone at least 60 years old and a Filipino citizen.
Aside from the 20-percent discount in restaurants, pharmacies, transportation, etc., senior citizens are also exempted from VAT./PN
