BACOLOD City – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in this city has issued show-cause orders to certain candidates participating in the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Election (BSKE).
These candidates face allegations of engaging in premature campaigning.
The Task Force against Premature Campaign, under the supervision of Comelec officer Kathrina Trinio-Caña, issued these orders on Sept. 20.
While the identities of the candidates, their respective barangays, and the positions they are vying for are being withheld by the city Comelec officer, the BSKE candidates have been granted a three-day window to respond to these allegations.
Caña stressed that failure to provide a response within this timeframe may result in disqualification, depending on the recommendations made.
In response to queries about how the alleged offenses came to the attention of the task force, Caña stated, “I do not have information on how they were alerted to this matter; there may have been a complaint involved.”
The Comelec officer expressed her hope that this development will serve as a lesson to the candidates and, indeed, to the general public, emphasizing the importance of adhering to election laws.
The official campaign period for the BSKE is scheduled from Oct. 19 to Oct. 28./PN
