Shredded banknotes unfit – central bank

ROXAS City – Shredded banknotes found in a vacant lot in Barangay Cagay here were indeed up for disposal, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) here.

The shredding was part of BSP’s nationwide “Clean Note Policy” – it regularly withdraws from circulation banknotes that are mutilated and unfit, the BSP branch explained in a statement.

These unfit banknotes are shredded then disposed by an accredited service provider to a designated dumpsite for proper disposal so these could no longer be re-circulated, it added.

“The central bank fosters the circulation of clean notes for health and sanitary reasons,” stressed BSP Roxas City branch in a statement dated Feb. 12.

But how did shredded banknotes end up at a private vacant lot in Barangay Cagay?

BSP Roxas City said it conducted an investigation and found out that its service provider unloaded some shredded banknotes when its cargo truck underwent an unscheduled repair at the service provider’s office due to mechanical issues.

The unloaded items were inadvertently left behind when the repaired truck eventually proceeded to the dumpsite.

As of Feb.12, said shredded banknotes were already delivered to the designated dumpsite.

For its part, the service provider took full responsibility for the incident.

“In this regard, the public is advised to surrender to the BSP all shredded banknotes that may have come into their possession,” BSP Roxas City added./PN
