BACOLOD City – The local government of Silay City, Negros Occidental will host the 5th International Rondalla Festival slated on Nov. 3 to 11 this year.
Yesterday, the city government represented by Mayor Mark Andrew Golez and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) represented by festival director Ramon Santos signed a memorandum of agreement.
This year’s festival installment is dubbed as “cuerdas sang paghiliusa (strings of unity),” according to Santos.
Golez said the festival will coincide with the “Silay Cinco de Noviembre,” an annual local religious celebration.
The mayor added that the provincial government allotted P1 million for the event.
About 400 plucked string musicians are expected to gather for the Rondalla Festival. They will be from the Philippines, China, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Uganda, and Vitenam, the organizers said.
The festival will feature rondalla concerts, outreach performances, conferences, workshops, and a Silay musical heritage exhibition, among others.
The activities are designed to “promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of a shared musical heritage,” the organizers added.
According to Santos, Silay has been chosen to host the event due to its “strong support” for rondalla.
Silay is recognized as one of the major cities in the Philippines with strong government and community support for this rich musical heritage, Santos added.
NCCA’s National Music Committee initiated the International Rondalla Festival in 2004./PN
