BACOLOD City – Garbage clogging the drainage in Barangay Singcang-Airport is the culprit behind the flooding problem in the city, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Due to this, City District Engineer Abraham Villareal urged the public to properly dispose of their trash.
For quite some time, Villareal said they had been wondering what triggered the floods during episodes of heavy downpour in Bacolod last August and September.
It was only recently that the DPWH maintenance crew discovered about a ton of trash that accumulated in Singcang-Airport’s drainage, particularly near the flyover, he added.
Villareal said they have yet to conclude where the trash came from, adding that they have cleaned all other drainages in the city.
He said the trash may have come from the river.
Meanwhile, the P55-million drainage project along Lacson Street from corner Rizal Street-Mandalagan Bridge is “almost complete,” according to Villareal.
The road affected by the construction is now passable but the drainage is not yet operational.
Villareal said they still have to install inlets – a task to be done after the MassKara Festival this October./PN
