ILOILO City – At 5 a.m. today, a motorcade of fire trucks around the city will kick off the observance of Fire Prevention Month. Their sirens will be blaring loud.
“People might think there’s fire somewhere. Please don’t be baffled. This is our way of starting the Fire Prevention Month,” said Fire Chief Inspector Bartolome Biliran, chief of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region 6’s Administration Division.
An hour before the motorcade, BFP will stage a fun walk from the Iloilo provincial capitol grounds to the bureau’s office on Muelle Loney Street, City Proper.
At 12 noon, various fire stations across the city will simultaneously switch on their sirens. The alarm will last for five minutes.
March is the traditional Fire Prevention Month in the Philippines. Statistics show a lot of fire incidents occurring during this month until the dry season is over, explained Biliran.
The dry season is from March to April, but sometimes extends up to May.
This year’s Fire Prevention Month theme is Buhay at Ari-arian Pahalagahan. Ibayong Pag-iingat sa Sunog ay sa Sariling Pamamahay Simulan.
The BFP has lined up month-long activities that included house-to-house information campaign on fire safety.
There will be photo and poster-making contests, too, for elementary and high school students.
Biliran also said there will be a “fire olympics” where various BFP personnel and volunteers would be showcasing their firefighting skills./PN
