BACOLOD City — St. John’s Institute (SJI) varsity team remains unbeaten in the SJI Volleyball Friendship Cup at the Msgr. John Liu Activity Center.

It defeated Batch 2010–14, 25-15, 25-15, for a third straight victory during their match last Saturday.

In another match, Batch 2009 earlier barged into the victors’ column by beating SJI Mommies, 25-22, 25-14, while the Aspirants improved to 2-1 at the expense of the Faculty, 25-16, 25-11.

In the opening set, five straight service aces by Carmela Arcolas Gamboa gave the Mommies an early 4-point lead, but the Alumni behind Liza Calangan, Terry Sepe and Merlouine Golez net attacks later grabbed the lead, 17-14.

The Mommies’ Quimpo service tied the game at 17-all, and lead changes for both teams ensued up to 22 all.

A good return by Michelle Soliva and two service aces by Golez clinched the set for the Alumni.

Meanwhile, the varsity team has not dropped a set in the tourney.

It also had two blockers marking the offensive players of the Alumni, Rosel Sy and Kathleen Tan.
