SKY Cable-Iloilo and Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights advanced to the finals of the Iloilo Governor’s Cup National Invitational Basketball Championships after finishing the elimination round in the top two.
Sky Cable-Iloilo completed a sweep of its three elimination round matches after defeating Mapua University Cardinals in lopsided fashion Saturday night at the Pototan Astrodome.
Former two-time PBA MVP Willie Miller, Negrense Mark Yee, Cameroonian import Rodrigue Ebondo, and Chito Jaime were at the forefront of offense for Sky Cable-Iloilo against Cardinals.
Banking on the experience of its players, Sky Cable-Iloilo surged to an early advantage in the opening half behind Yee and Miller before preventing the second-half runs of Cardinals.
In the other match, Centro Escolar University Scorpions escaped with a 106-104 victory over Knights with Orlan Wamar, Paul Galinato, Rich Guinitaran, and Ebuka Umeanozie leading the offense.
The victory of Scorpions created a three-way tie among Scorpions, Knights and Cardinals for the second and last finals seat, which was clinched by Knight by virtue of a higher quotient.
Knights was +15 in quotient by virtue of its 91-74 win over Cardinals last Thursday and 2-point loss to Scorpions. Scorpions came in second with -3 followed by Cardinals with -12.
“We cannot be complacent against Letran. As you can see, we had a close game in the eliminations,” said Sky Cable-Iloilo head coach Ronjay Enrile. “That we have former PBA players is not a guarantee that we will win all the matches.”/PN
