CULASI, Antique – During a visit to Antique, Secretary Manny Piñol of the Department of Agriculture (DA) presented the concept of solar-powered irrigations systems.

He said this could address the problem on the lack of irrigation service in rain-fed / upland areas.

The concept involves drilling of wells, and with the aid of a solar panel, the submersible pump draws out water for the rice field, said Piñol.

“I am happy that the farmers wholeheartedly shared their concerns,” the Secretary said after holding a dialogue with farmers’ associations on March 15.

He distributed farm equipment and other interventions worth P15,210,600 to the farmers’ associations.

Piñol said these were part of President Duterte’s thrust to help the sector’s productivity and income.

“With the openness they have shown during the dialogue, I can say that people see their government as an institution that could provide answers for their problems, and we are succeeding in delivering good governance,” Piñol said.

He urged the farmers to use certified seeds to improve productivity.

The Secretary also committed 15 patrol boats to be distributed to the 15 coastal towns to help address illegal fishing concerns in the province.

The equipment and interventions distributed included the following:

* several units of hand tractors

* tresher

* corn mill

* hammer mill

* water pump and engine

* combine harvester

* village-type corn-on-cob dryer

* fiberglass motorized banca

* green house

* rice certified seeds

* various vegetable seeds

* cacao seedlings

* white corn seeds

* yellow corn seeds, and

* plastic drums.

Pinol also presented a proposed loan package for registered farmers. (PIA-Antique/PN)
