ILOILO City – A 28-year-old soldier was detained at the police station in Roxas City for alleged indiscriminate firing.
Private First Class John Rey Pianera of the Philippine Army 3rd Infantry Division’s (3ID) Civil Military Unit was also facing investigation.
Pianera and a civilian were drinking at the Distrito Kitchen and Bar in Barangay Inzo Arnaldo, Roxas City around 12:35 a.m. on June 2 when the soldier went mad, police said, citing waiter Diecem Tamayo.
Pianera then pulled out his firearm — a .38-caliber revolver — and discharged it once into the air, causing other customers to panic, police said.
Responding police officers seized the gun (loaded with 12 live bullets) from Pianera. They also found an empty shell.
A resident of Pototan, Iloilo, Pianera failed to present his Permit to Carry Firearm Outside of Residence and License to Own and Possess Firearm, police said.
The 3ID is investigating the soldier, said Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Cabugon, spokesperson.
An administrative case may be slapped against Pianera if he is found guilty of the wrongdoing, Cabugon said. “The result (of the investigation) will be forwarded to the 3ID. We are not tolerating such act.”
Pianera denied the accusation and insisted that his firearm fell to the ground and accidentally went off, said Cabugon.
“Kahit na nahulog ang baril niya, as what he told me, liable pa rin siya kasi dapat nag-iingat siya in handling his gun, especially sa mga lugar na maraming tao,” Cabugon told Panay News in a phone interview./PN
