ILOILO City – A Philippine Army bunkhouse in Barangay Libot, Calinog, Iloilo caught fire on Wednesday. A soldier was injured.
Staff Sergeant Adonis Mesias was taken to the Dr. Ricardo S. Provido Sr. Memorial District Hospital. He sustained second degree burns.
The bunkhouse belonged to the 61st Infantry Battalion. According to battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Sisenando Magbalot, the fire struck around 8:30 a.m. and quickly spread.
The bunkhouse was made of light materials.
Misias returned to his room to retrieve his service firearm and in the process sustained burns, said Mabalot.
The three motorcycle owned by soldiers and an R4 assault rifle were gutted.
“Our men were not able to secure them,” said Magbalot.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection of Calinog, soldiers saw a spark from an electric wire prior to the fire.
As of this writing, the BFP was yet to give an estimate of the damage./PN
