Soldier, ‘tanod’ shot dead

ILOILO City – A member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and a village watchman died while two others were wounded in a shooting on Saturday night in Barangay Pandanan, Laua-an, Antique.

The fatalities were Private First Class Jeson Cordero and barangay tanod Jeorge Lavega of Virginia, Lauaan, Antique.

Those wounded were Corporal Miguelito Perez and Private Frist Class Jason Respiel.

The shooting happened around 8:45 p.m. The soldiers were binge drinking at their bunk house. A colleague was celebrating his birthday party, said Superintendent Alexander Rosales, municipal police chief.

The wounded Lavega had been identified as one of the four suspects in the shooting. The three others were his cousins Gilbert Necor, village treasurer; Christopher Lavega; and Jeoffrey Legaspi.

The four suspects were known to the soldiers and joined the men in uniform in the drinking binge prior to the shooting, said Rosales.

Policemen arrested Necor after the shooting. He yielded a .357 revolver. Legaspi and Lavega were able to escape.

“We have yet to ascertain what triggered the shooting,” said Rosales yesterday./PN
