MANILA – Soldiers in Negros Island plan to seek aid from Islamic leaders, or Ulamas, in averting radicalization among Muslim youths in the region, a top Philippine Army official said.

Major General Jon Aying, 3rd Infantry Division commander, said this is part of the Comprehensive Anti-Terrorism Program (CATERP) of the Armed Forces.

CATERP has three phases: preventing violent extremism, deterring terror attacks and responding to terror attacks.

It is highly important for the Army to reach out to the country’s Muslim brethren to stop the youth from joining terror groups like the Islamic State, the Maute Group and the Abu Sayyaf Group, said Aying.

Aying was in Bacolod City on Tuesday for the activation of the first Negros Island Region Geographical Battalion.

Meanwhile the Army official also confirmed to the local press that government forces have killed the last two Abu Sayyaf stragglers who went to Bohol province during the Holy Week in Calape town.

Abu Ubayda and Abu Asis were gunned down after they held an old man and his grandchild hostage in exchange for food, said Aying.

Aying also assured there were no more Abu Sayyaf fighters roaming the Visayas./PN
