ROXAS CITY – The National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) approved the 10-year solid waste management (SWM) plans of all local government units (LGUs) in this province.
“After a long process of drafting, creation, planning, deliberation, consultation, revision, and proposal, the 10-year SWM plans of 17 LGUs in the province were approved by the NSWMC,” Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CaPENRO) said.
Under Republic Act (RA) 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, it is mandatory for LGUs to have SWM plans.
RA 9003 prohibits local governments from operating open or controlled dumpsites and mandates them to, among others, establish materials recovery facilities, also known as ecology centers, in every barangay or cluster of barangays to promote waste prevention and reduction in the grassroots level.
A material recovery facility includes a solid waste transfer station or sorting station, drop-off center, a composting facility, and a recycling facility.
“They are all ready to move forward in creating an ecologically sustainable and resilient Capiz. Together we make Capiz green,” CaPENRO stressed.
Prior to the creation of CaPENRO, only the municipality of Jamindan had an approved 10-year SWM plan./PN
