BACOLOD City – Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said the country’s economic managers should find an alternative to the proposed liberalization of sugar imports on Saturday.

“Instead of ‘killing the farmers’, by saying we should just import, we should come up with an alternative,” Zubiri said.

The senator said the alternative is bridging the gap between the producer and the consumer.

He noted that in South Korea and other countries, the produce goes directly to the cooperative markets, which sell it straight to the end-users.

“Either sold it to the end-users or to sell it, just like big supermarkets and other facilities are doing now,” Zubiri said.

The senator also assured the proposed liberalization of sugar industry won’t pass in the Senate.

“For as long as we are in the Senate, we assure the Negrenses and the 28 provinces that are producing sugar that we will not act on it,” he said.

Zubiri joined the senatorial bets who are supportive of the sugar industry in their grand campaign rally at the Victorias City Coliseum on Friday.

“We need to revitalize the sugar industry,” he added. (With PNA/PN)
