MANILA – A lawmaker has urged Philippine schools to conduct “month-long” educational activities to be held every September, commemorating the declaration of Martial Law.
On Sept. 21, 1972, former President Ferdinand Marcos proclaimed a state of martial law in the Philippines.
Stressing the human rights abuses and atrocities committed during martial law, Sen. Risa Hontiveros, in filing a resolution on Monday, lamented the failure of educational institutions to teach the Marcos dictatorship at all levels of education.
Hontiveros said it has been three years since the law that allows the mandatory teaching of Martial Law history was enacted into law.
“We must not allow the Marcoses to steal from us again. We must not allow them to rob us of our truth and sense of history,” she added.
Reiterating her stand against giving the former President Ferdinand Marcos a hero’s burial, the senator from Capiz asked the government of President Rodrigo Duterte to “abandon its plan.”
Burying the late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani is “the ultimate act of airbrushing history in favor of the Marcoses,” Hontiveros said.
Akbayan’s Rep. Tom Villarin filed a similar resolution at the House of Representatives./PN
