Solon vows lower electricity rates by end of 2019

MANILA – Sen, Sherwin Gatchalian on Monday assured the public that the proposed Murang Kuryente Law, which will reduce electricity rates, would be implemented by the end of the year.

Ang estimate namin within the year, by end of the year ma-implement at makita natin bababa ‘yung presyo ng kuryente natin,” Gatchalian said in an interview on GMA News’ “Unang Balita.”

Malaki kasi ‘yung pondo na gagamitin so pag-aaralan ‘yan. But within the year ang target na mapababa ‘yung presyo ng kuryente natin,” he added.

The bicameral conference committee already approved the proposed law that aims to trim the universal charge by using part of the Malampaya fund to pay the debts incurred by the National Power Corporation (Napocor) and Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (Psalm).

However, the bill will not be immediately ready for President Rodrigo Duterte’s signature to make it into a law since Congress cannot ratify the approved bicameral conference report as the Senate and the House of Representatives are not in session due to the election season.

According to the senator, at least 16 million households will benefit from this law.

Meanwhile, asked about the present supply of electricity this summer season, Gatchalian said there is enough supply of electricity.

“This summer tinitingnan namin ang supply at demand at mukhang maganda naman ang sitwasyon natin ngayon. Kahit may El Niño may enough supply tayo ng kuryente,” Gatchalian said. (GMA News)
