BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) deferred the passage of a resolution declaring businessman Kevin L. Tan an “adopted” son of this city.
During the SP’s regular session on Wednesday, Oct. 5, before Councilor Jason Villarosa read his proposed resolution, Councilor Thaddeus Sayson noticed that copies of it furnished to the SP members had no attachment of the request letter from Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez seeking such a resolution.
Sayson suggested that before the SP gives its approval, the mayor must first submit to the council a request letter.
Villarosa said he was verbally asked by the mayor for the passage of such a proposed resolution.
But because a more formal communication was needed, the SP deferred from taking appropriate action.
Possibly before the next session next week, the City Mayor’s Office may have already submitted the request letter, Villarosa said.
The proposed resolution cited Tan as chief executive officer and vice chairman of Alliance Global Inc., a holding company that includes real estate through Megaworld Corporation, hospitality and property management through Travellers International Hotel Group Inc., and liquor through Emperador Inc.
It added that Tan took over the family business after the retirement of his father, Dr. Andrew Tan, and has targeted numerous cities to invest in.
As president of Megaworld Real Estate Investment Trust (MREIT), Tan has been instrumental in its investment in Bacolod City.
According to the proposed resolution, the impact of the corporation’s investments on the advancement of economic growth of the city cannot be understated./PN
