SP grieves demise of former councilor Alim

ILOILO City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) passed a resolution condoling with the family of former councilor Atty. Joshua Alim who died on Jan. 15.

Part of the SP resolution introduced by Councilor Ely Estante Jr. read: “Former Iloilo City councilor Joshua Alim recently succumbed to cardiac arrest after struggling with certain debilitating conditions. He was only 57. We grieve his untimely demise.”

Alim was elected to the SP for a total of six terms or 18 years from 1998-2001; 2001-2004; 2004-2007; and from 2010-2013; 2013-2016; and 2016-2019.

He served as majority leader and chairman of various committees.  

Alim had also authored many ordinances such as the one creating the Iloilo City Urban Poor Affairs Office (ICUPAO) which provides housing and addresses the needs of Iloilo City’s impoverished.

He also authored the Anti-Smoking Ordinance which basically created a smoke-free Iloilo City and gaining for Iloilo City prestigious national distinctions and awards.  

Likewise, he authored numerous resolutions and frequently delivered privileged speeches focusing on his advocacies and concerns especially on behalf of the poor and the oppressed.

Alim was also a professor of laws, human rights advocate, a realtor, a Dangal ng Bayan Awardee, and president of the Cental Philippine University Alumni Association.

“We in the Iloilo City Council deeply mourn the passing of a former colleague and pillar of this institution,” according to the SP./PN
