SP: Keep students out of internet shops, malls during class hours

BACOLOD City – Students in public and private elementary schools in the city must not be in computer shops, malls, theaters, and the likes during class hours, according to the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP).

The SP through a resolution asked the Department of Education (DepEd), Bacolod City Police Office and Department of Social Services Development to initiate programs to make sure that DepEd’s Department Order No. 86 series of 2010 is followed.

The order enjoins school officials to “provide their students with worthwhile and productive activities during their free time in school” to prevent students from being absent and cutting classes.

Resolution proponent Councilor Ricardo Tan said as classes open, high school students are expected to flock to malls and enter computer shops near their schools.

“These minors are given free access to all forms of computer gaming and internet shows, roam around the malls and do other things except study during class hours, especially in the afternoon,” Tan added.

The councilor stressed that the local government and other concerned agencies must see to it that students are at school during class hours and not somewhere else./PN
