Special voters’ registration for elderly, PWDs today

ILOILO City – There’s a one day special voters’ registration today for senior citizens and persons with disabilities in all city and municipal election offices in Western Visayas.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) regional office urged those wanting to register but not senior citizens or PWDs to give way to these two special sectors today.

According to Atty. Tomas Valera, assistant Comelec regional director, election offices would also entertain the following registration-related concerns of the elderly and PWDs: transfer of registration, re-activate of record and correction of data entries, among others.

In this city, the special registration will be at the second floor of Robinsons Place Iloilo mall in the City Proper.

The mall has elevators and escalators that the elderly and PWDs could use, said Valera.

He, however, does not expect a dramatic surge of registrants today, noting that the barangay election was held just this May.

Comelec Iloilo City also has a daily satellite registration. It will end this Sept.

After this date, unserved clients are advised to proceed to Robinsons Place Iloilo where a registration will be held Sept. 19 to 29.

City Election Officer II Jonathan Sayno said they have been conducting off-site registration to cater to voters in preparation for next year’s local election.

Sayno said they are the ones going out to barangays instead of waiting for these registrants to come to the Comelec office.

The mobile registration in Arevalo, Molo and Mandurriao districts has been completed. Comelec, as a strategy, clusters smaller barangays into one venue for the registration.

However, a separate registration is held in barangays with prospects of bigger voters.

“In every district, we have five venues for the registration,” said Sayno.

From Aug. 29 to Sept. 7, the registration will cater to barangays in the City Proper district and Sept. 8 to 15 for La Paz district.

Meanwhile, a two-day registration will be held for male inmates at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Barangay Ungka, Jaro and female inmates at the prison facility on General Luna Street this Sept. 17 to 18. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency/PN)
