BACOLOD City – In response to a significant increase in pork prices, the city government is set to convene its Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC).
Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez directed City Administrator Lucille Gelvolea to organize the LPCC meeting after noticing a spike in pork prices to P410 per kilogram, up from P400, during a recent visit to the Burgos Public Market.
LPCC’s role is to monitor and devise strategies to stabilize commodity prices amidst these fluctuations. This initiative follows Benitez’s Executive Order 09-2024, issued on Feb. 23, which lifted restrictions on the importation of live pigs and pork products into the city, provided they are accompanied by the required permits and documentation.
Negros Occidental’s Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson supports this move, hoping it will aid in the recovery from the African swine fever (ASF) impact.
A joint executive order issued by the province and city on the same day aims to lower pork prices in Bacolod, where costs have soared to P410 per kilogram, in stark contrast to the P290 price tag outside the city.
Lacson emphasized the goal of reducing pork prices in the city.
Meanwhile, Mayor Benitez revealed plans to refurbish Burgos Public Market rather than proceed with the purchase of an adjacent lot for a new market construction.
The renovation will focus on enhancing the existing structure without disrupting vendor operations, including installing a high roof and later adding air conditioning powered by solar energy.
