Spikers keeps Tornadoes winless in PVL Invitational

MANILA – Cignal HD Spikers got back on the winning track in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League Invitational after a 25-10, 25-16, 25-22 win over Foton Tornadoes on Tuesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Maria Angelica Cayuna was named as the Player of the Game after tallying 22 excellent sets to go with three points as the HD Spikers notched their second win in three outings.

Frances Xinia Molina top-scored for the HD Spikers with 16 points, Guimarasnon Jovelyn Gonzaga added 14 markers and Roselyn Doria also chipped in double-digits with 10 points for Cignal HD.

The HD Spikers went to work early behind Molina, Gonzaga, Doria and Rachel Anne Daquis as they cruised to lopsided victories over the Tornadoes in the first two sets.

The Tornadoes, however, showed some life in the third frame as they managed to keep in step with the HD Spikers but Cignal relied on their experience to end the match in straight sets.

Ilongga Ma. Shaya Adorador was the lone double-digit scorer for the Tornadoes with 13 points, while Mary Rhose Dapol and Jasmine Nabor combined for 11 markers. They dropped to 0-3 slate.

In the first game, Petro Gazz Angels survived a tough challenge from newcomer Farm Fresh Foxies for a 25-21, 31-29, 25-17 triumph and keep their semifinals hopes alive.

Gretchel Soltones led the way with 16 points, including 15 attacks, to go with nine excellent digs as the Angels notched its second victory in three matches in Pool B.

Ilongga Aiza Maizo-Pontillas added 15 markers, with 13 attacks, one block and a service ace, while Cienne Cruz exhibited her prowess on the defensive end with 19 excellent receptions and 10 excellent digs for Petro Gazz.

Gayle Pascual emerged as the lone standout for Farm Fresh with 11 points and seven digs while Santiago contributed seven points as her team tasted its third defeat in as many matches./PN
