St. Louis Online Rapid & Blitz Chess underway; Carlsen leads

The St. Louis Online Rapid & Blitz Chess Tournament started Sept. 15 at the lichess.org chess server with ten of the world’s top blitz and rapid players competing.

The combatants are world champions Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Alexander Grischuk, Levon Aronian, Wesley So, Leinier Dominguez Perez, Alireza Firouzja, Jeffrey Xiong, and Pentala Harikrishna.

The ten will first play a single round robin rapid at 25 minutes plus five seconds increment per move, and then a double round robin blitz at five minutes plus three seconds increment per move format.

The kitty is a whopping $250,000 – that’s P12,108,750 at the current exchange rate! The overall winner gets $50,000, runner-up gets $40,000, third place gets $35,000 and so forth.

After six rounds of play, Carlsen is leading the pack, with Nepomniachtchi and So tailing him closely. So far, only Wesley is undefeated in the event, racking up two wins and four draws in the Category 21 (average Elo: 2763) competition.

So, Wesley (2770)-Xiong, J (2709) [B30]
