Sta. Clarita vs John B. in ISSA basketball Category B finals

SANTA Clarita International High School Primes and John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University headed to the finals in Category B of secondary boys basketball of the Iloilo Schools Sports Association Meet at the PAREF-Westbridge School for Boys gym in Iloilo City.

Franc Steven Tono made a game-winning basket for Primes to escape with an 81-79 victory against University of San Agustin in the Saturday semifinals. James Kzyer Yap led the Primes with 17 points while Kim Rey Servano added 14.

With the scores tied 89-all after a triple by San Agustin’s John Michael Vicencio, Tono scored a conversion with 14 seconds left for the Primes to surge. San Agustin had a chance to force overtime but Val Raniel Deaño overshot his layup.

John B. claimed the other finals seat after a lopsided 74-42 victory over Iloilo Sacred Heart School. Paul Vincent Jandic continued his fine play for John B. with 26 points.

The Category B final game between Primes and John B. will be on Oct. 2. The winner will face the No. 6 ranked team in Category A in the qualifying round of the Category A quarterfinals.

In elementary boys basketball, San Agustin cruised to their third straight victory as they annihilated Santa Isabel College of Iloilo 81-8. Chad Ernest Cartel led San Agustin with 12 points.

Hua Siong College of Iloilo Red Phoenix, meanwhile, dealt the defending champions Ateneo de Iloilo with a 49-16 pounding. Jake Andrei Guara topped the scoring for the Red Phoenix with 14.

St. Joseph School, on the other hand, captured their first victory with a 56-36 rout of Santa Clarita Primes. Samuel Madison Jr. unloaded 11 points while Valentin Nabo added 10 markers for St. Joseph./PN
