MANILA – Abou Sy scored on a go-ahead goal as Stallion-Laguna FC escaped with a 1-0 victory over Mendiola FC 1991 in the 2019 Philippines Football League at the PFF National Training Centre in Carmona, Cavite.
A far cry from its 6-1 demolition of Mendiola in their first encounter, Stallion-Laguna was pushed to the limit in the entire match with newcomers Ricki Sendra, Soul Ndepe and goalie Dini Outtara making a good account of themselves.
But all the efforts poured in by Mendiola went to drain as Sy found the target at the 80th minute. Stallion-Laguna broke the scoreless deadlock.
Mendiola tried its best to keep in step but could not pull off a game-tying goal. “We did not get the result that we wanted, but a win is a win,” said Stallion-Laguna interim coach Jade Bejemino. “We give credit to Mendiola for the hard-earned three points.”
With the victory, Stallion-Laguna remained third in the standings with 17 points on five wins, two draws and two losses, behind defending champions Ceres-Negros FC (22 points) and Kaya Futbol Club-Iloilo (19 points).
Mendiola, on the other hand, remains in the fifth place with four points to show, just on top of cellar-dwelling teams Global Makati FC (three points) and Philippine Air Force FC (one point)./PN
