Started but not finished yet

THE PASSING of South Africa’s last white president FW de Klerk marks the end of those from the leadership of South Africa during the apartheid times.

He did start the process of transition to democracy where everyone had a vote, but he also worked for a long time in the apartheid system and didn’t seem to really apologize, recognize and refute apartheid as completely as he should have.

It is customary to praise those who pass, and he did start the process, but the full picture is more complex than that. Although apartheid has officially gone, are all the people in South Africa offered the same opportunities? I think there is more to do.

Rest in peace and hope that others continue with the journey to full equality in South Africa.

There are still a few odd ideas out there
Again, the possibly deranged are out and about with a number of QAnon devotees meeting in Dallas waiting for JFK Jr. to arrive and restore Donald Trump to the presidency despite having been dead for 20 years. He didn’t return and their optimism is amusing although an area of concern.

There have been a few events that people have thought were miraculous although so far as we know none of them were Trump-based or related. Let’s leave the miracles to the area of medical illnesses although in reality they are due to the great work of medical workers and researchers and the strength of the patients.

The world including QAnon followers need to concentrate on the real problems they face, including climate change, famines and COVID. If those are solved then the search for JFK Jr. as well as Elvis can continue.

In case the QAnon people haven’t caught up on the latest alternative facts, JFK Jr. and Elvis are living on the secret moon base and maybe those that believe the QAnon messages should head there.

Bird-brained trolls
It looks like Big Bird is the latest “person” to get vaccinated and like most he is glad to tell everyone that he has done the right thing.

He has also been trolled by some yellow cowards on social media because he has protected himself and his friends and family. This seems odd given that he is not old enough to be on most social media platforms and so their efforts are wasted.

It seems that there are always a few bird-brained individuals out there who look for their wisdom on social media rather than listen to scientists but it is their democratic right to be wrong.

It’s time to give the anti-vaxxers the bird. (dfitzger@melbpc.org.au)/PN
