BACOLOD City – Human rights group Karapatan-Negros blasted some members of Congress for allowing President Rodrigo Duterte to use them as “pawns.”
Karapatan-Negros secretary-general Clarizza Singson-Dagatan said some members of Congress can no longer represent the people.
They only represent their “personal interest,” she stressed.
“These officials do not listen to the calls of majority of Filipinos but only to the interest of the ruling elite,” Singson-Dagatan said after senators and House representatives granted Duterte’s request to extend martial law in Mindanao for one year – from Jan. 1, 2018 to Dec. 31, 2018.
The Senate voted 14-4 while the House of Representatives voted 226-23 favoring the martial law extension.
The first six months of martial law in Mindanao had been “unbearable” for the people there, according to Singson-Dagatan.
She said Filipinos must be extra vigilant of Duterte’s motive in extending martial law in Mindanao.
Singson-Dagatan said progressive organizations under the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan will meet to plan actions on the martial law extension.
Karapatan-Negros is condemning human rights abuses under Duterte’s war on drugs that claimed over 13,000 lives and the harassments of peasant group members allegedly perpetrated by military members and other state agents encamped in communities in Negros Island./PN
