ILOILO City – Farmers in Western Visayas were assured of immediate assistance after the full inventory of the damage that tropical depression “Agaton” caused.

James Earl Ogatis, officer-in-charge of the Department of Agriculture (DA) regional agri-fishery information section, said the reports of damage from various local government units have started coming on Monday.

DA regional executive director Remely Recoter said the agency has buffer stock of seeds ready for release after the final inventory.

The Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. is also assessing affected farmlands in the region.

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) will convene today for an emergency meeting that will discuss the storm-triggered damages in Western Visayas.

RDRRMC head Jose Roberto Nuñez said the meeting will also discuss the updates on the Panay River Basin Project, which is eyed to address the flooding problem in Capiz.

Thousands of families in Capiz were forced to move to evacuation centers due to the flooding caused by the torrential rains that “Agaton” dumped in the province last week.

The flooding has put the towns of Panitan and Pontevedra under a state of calamity.

Initial assessment showed that a total of 9,736 hectares of rice lands in Capiz were damaged. (PNA/PN)
