Storm surge rips 3 houses

ILOILO City – Storm surge brought about by an enhanced southwest monsoon destroyed three houses in the coastal barangay of Ortiz in the City Proper.

Storm surge is the abnormal rise in seawater level during inclement weather, measured as the height of the water above the normal predicted astronomical tide.

The surge is caused primarily by strong winds pushing water onshore, which can lead to flooding. This makes storm surges dangerous for coastal regions.

Two of the three houses were totally damaged. They were owned by Carol Ariola and Ronnie Abayon.

“Wala gid may nasalba nga mga gamit ang tagsa ka pamilya,” said Donna Magno, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).

The partially damaged house was owned by Mylene Delfin.

The storm surge struck around 9 a.m. yesterday.

There were no casualties, said Magno.

The affected families temporarily moved to the daycare center of Ortiz.

Typhoon “Domeng” left the Philippine area of responsibility yesterday, according to the state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), but it continued to enhance the southwest monsoon.

The CDRRMO also reported fallen and/or uprooted trees due to strong winds in Barangay Boulevard, Molo district and Sta. Filomena in Arevalo district.

Pagasa advised the public to monitor weather updates, to take extra precaution for possible flashflood and landslides, and to coordinate with local authorities and offices.

It said Visayas will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms caused by the monsoon trough.

Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers because of localized thunderstorms./PN
