ANTIQUE – A stranded motor banca carrying 14 passengers was rescued yesterday morning.

The Caluya Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) received a distress call from the sea vessel stranded between Sibolo Island in Barangay Sibolo, Caluya and Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan due to engine failure.

“The incident unfolded earlier today, May 15, when the motor banca carrying 14 individuals experienced a sudden engine failure off Sibolo Island and Boracay Island during its voyage from Sibolo going to Culasi. With no means of propulsion, the vessel was left stranded in open waters, facing unpredictable currents and rough waters,” read part of the Caluya MDRRMO’s statement.

The MDRRMO immediately activated the search and rescue team and coordinated with the Philippine Coast Guard, which comprises highly trained professionals who specialize in such emergencies. The team launched a coordinated operation to locate and assist the troubled motor banca.

The Caluya MDRRMO said the incident would serve as a reminder of the importance of maritime safety.

“Laging mapagmatyag, maging handa, maging alerto at maging ligtas sa ano mang uri ng sakuna,” it added./PN
