ILOILO City – The city government is constructing in Barangay Sooc, Arevalo district a shelter for stray dogs.
The facility will have a water system and septic tank, among others, according to Mayor Jerry Treñas.
He saw the need to construct the facility to curb the increasing cases of dog bites.
“Kada summer nagadamu nagakinahanglan sang anti-rabies (vaccines). Damu ginakagat kada summer,” said Treñas.
But stray dogs in the shelter won’t be kept there forever. They would be offered for adoption.
Another move is to castrate stray dogs to control their population.
Treñas is maintaining a no-kill policy for stray dogs.
“Ginasigurado ko nga strikto naton nga pagasundon ang no-kill policy kag pagabuksan for adoption ang dog shelter para sa aton mga fur parents nga determinado makahatag balay para sa ila,” he said.
The dog shelter project of the city mayor’s office is being assisted by the City Veterinary Office (CVO), General Services Office (GSO) and City Engineer’s Office.
The CVO will oversee the shelter’s operation.
For the dogs’ food, the city government will be coordinating with fast food chains for their leftovers./PN
