ILOILO City – A total of 11,811 commuters were served by government vehicles mobilized to transport people stranded by two days of jeepney strike on June 5 and 6.
According to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), 6,680 persons availed themselves of free rides on Monday and 5,131 yesterday.
The transport strike was a protest against the proposed phaseout of passenger jeepneys 15 years old and older.
Militant groups sympathetic to the striking jeepney drivers held protests but these were peaceful, too, said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 6.
“We are very thankful,” he said.
On the other hand, Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6 spokesperson Lea Belleza said public elementary and high schools resumed classes smoothly on Monday despite the transport strike.
She placed the school attendance of students at 92 percent.
DepEd-6 left it to the sound discretion of parents whether they would send their children to school during the two-day transport strike.
A total of 48 government vehicles were used to counter the transport strike. They included those owned by the city government, Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Department of Education, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
No major problems were encountered, said City Administrator Hernando Galvez.
He commended the police, Philippine Army, the fire and jail bureaus for keeping the city peaceful and orderly./PN
