MANILA – While National Capital Region is again seen as the runaway winner, the much-improved Western Visayas is expected to put up a good fight in this year’s Palarong Pambansa from April 15 to 21 in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
Department of Education undersecretary Tonisito Umali said Region 6 is expected to have a better showing than last year with the return of Negros Occidental to its fold.
“Last year Calabarzon/Southern Tagalog and Western Visayas regions were engaged in a close battle for runner-up honors in Antique,” Umali said Tuesday at the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum.
“So we’ll have to see ano ang effect ’pag ibinalik ulit as Regions 6 and 7 iyong Negros Occidental,” he said. “Mas lalakas pa ang Western Visayas sa Palarong Pambansa this year.”
More than 15,000 delegates from the country’s 17 regions are expected to converge in Vigan for the tournament.
Around 12,000 official athlete-delegates are competing in 21 regular sports events in secondary and 15 in elementary.
“Vigan is definitely ready. The province hosted a regional qualifier of the Batang Pinoy last year, and that showed its readiness to stage a big multisport event such as the Palaro,” said Umali.
“We had our final technical conference meeting a couple weeks ago para tingnan sa huling pagkakataon iyong preparation ng lalawigan. And, no doubt, the facilities are of international standards. Handang-handa na sila,” he added.
DepEd will continue to hold the demo sports pencak silat, aero gymnastics and dance sports, the same with the special para events in aquatics, track and field, bocce, and goal ball./PN
