MANILA – Two suicide bombers were seen as behind the bombing incidents at a military camp in Indanan, Sulu, which killed three soldiers and wounded 12 others on Friday.
Armed Forces of the Philippines – Western Mindanao Command spokesman Major Arvin Encinas said the first bomber might have detonated his device when frisked by three camp guards, who all died.
A second suicide bomber managed to get past the guards and detonated his explosive right after the initial blast. The second explosion wounded 12 persons inside the camp.
Encinas said there is a possibility that the two suicide bombers were from Abu Sayyaf given the previous activities of the terrorist group in the region.
Three suspicious persons were flagged down at a security checkpoint. However, only one of them was seen by the soldiers carrying a suspected improvised explosive device placed inside a bag.
Major Gen. Guillermo Eleazar on Friday said the National Capital Region police office was on full alert.
“Although there are no threats detected within the National Capital Region but as a proactive means in response to this terror attack, the entire region is now placed under full alert status effective 6 p.m. (Friday),” Eleazar said.
“Having this measure could mean of great help in deterring unscrupulous individuals in carrying out their illegal or terrorist acts,” he added. “But we also asked the public to remain alert and vigilant, and report any incident or suspicious person to the nearest police station.”/PN
